Frequently asked questions
How are card processing fees calculated?
Most processors charge a percentage of the sale plus a fixed fee per transaction. For example, 2.9% + $0.30 on a $100 sale is $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20, so you receive $96.80.
How do I charge a price that covers the fee?
Divide the amount you want to receive plus the fixed fee by 1 minus the percentage. To receive $100 at 2.9% + $0.30: (100 + 0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. The calculator does this for you.
Can I add a surcharge for card payments?
Card networks limit surcharges, and some states ban or cap them. Debit cards cannot be surcharged. Check your processor's rules and your state law before adding one.
