Frequently asked questions

Why does my new 1 TB drive show less space?

Manufacturers count 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Your computer uses binary units, where 1 TiB is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes, so it reports about 931 GB.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?

GB is decimal (1,000 MB) and is used on labels. GiB is binary (1,024 MiB) and is used by many operating systems for memory and file sizes.
